Returning to Buffalo and restoring the landmark Rand building marked yet another chapter in my 35-year journey as a professional costume designer and couture seamstress.
I learned to sew alongside my mother, who stitched everything from our school clothes to our father's golf shirts, pants, and sports jackets. By 19 years of age, I was taking in clients of my own.
After graduating from FIT, I sewed for an affluent clientele in Manhattan while while juggling costume design contracts for theatre companies throughout the country.
Costume design stretched my construction skills, whereas couture work developed my penchant for fit, finish, and flourish. Nothing can ruin the look of a beautiful garment faster than a bad "fit".
I've been creating bridal dreams and formal couture for 35 years, with no two dresses -- or clients -- alike. Some bring magazine images, some bring pics on their phone, while others bring a drawing or sketch. Then there's those who have no idea where to begin and together we start from the beginning.
Your clothes show the world who you are the minute you walk in the door. Choose a fabric, choose a style, choose the hardware. We can start with an image, an idea, a conversation. Let's see where it goes.
Truth be told, I would be thrilled if all my clients were kids!
I love working with kids, designing alongside them, and sometimes bringing their own ideas to life. From Birthday Dresses to First Communions to Bat Mitzvahs, and everything in between.
Bring in your young ones and let's have some fun!
I am currently not taking appointments for alternations. I will update this section when my schedule opens up again.
Thank you for your understanding. 9/20/24
The success of every garment is the fit.
A beautiful dress is a failure if it doesn't fit your form.
Whether we lengthen the arms of a jacket, lower a hem, take in bulk at the waist, shorten a shoulder seam -- a good alteration should be invisible. Even from the inside.
My career in costuming for theatre spans four decades.
Costumes are architectural, and they have to tell a story. Sometimes they stick to the original story, and other times they modernize an old story. Either way, this work taught me what I know about making a statement while pleasing the director, the producer, the actor, and myself.
Bow ties, neckties, ascots, shawls, and my recent favorite -- women's neckwear stitched from men's ties. These one-of-a-kind conversation starters can transform simple into spectacular.
